SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Mamie Clayborne Bolden of East St. Louis,
4who passed away on January 3, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, She was born on August 12, 1927, in Wahalak,
6Mississippi, the 12th child born to the union of Jesse and
7Indiana (Stennis) Clayborne; the family moved to East St. Louis
8when she was 8; she joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church
9and was baptized by Reverend B. Haney; and
 
10    WHEREAS, She attended John Robinson and Dunbar grade
11schools and graduated from Lincoln Sr. High with the class of
121947; she married Richard Bolden on Christmas Day in 1947; in
13her early married life, she worked in the partnership of the
14Eighth Street Service Station (Sinclair Service Station), an
15enterprise owned by her siblings and in-laws that operated from
161953 to 1965; beginning in 1973, she worked for two years as a
17receptionist in the office of Dr. A.M. Jackson; and
 
18    WHEREAS, On June 5, 1992, she retired from the Children's
19Center for Behavioral Development after 17 years of service;
20after rearing her children, she went back to school and earned
21an associate's degree in pre-teaching from State Community
22College (Metropolitan College) in 1974; and

1    WHEREAS, As a life-long member of Mt. Zion, her church
2involvement included being a Sunday School teacher, the BTU, a
3choir member, church youth director, president of the Deaconess
4Ministry, and head of special efforts such as the church
5anniversary; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Her community engagements included organizing the
7Olivette Park Neighborhood Association in 1995 and serving as
8its president for 6 years; she served on the board of the
9Lighthouse Community Development Corporation of East St.
10Louis; as an extension of her neighborhood work, it was not
11unusual to find her cleaning empty lots or alley ways in the
12neighborhood; and
 
13    WHEREAS, She credited her children with opening up a whole
14new world to her through travel; she traveled to East Germany
15and West Germany, and again when the two became one Germany;
16she saw the Berlin Wall; in Egypt, she traveled the route along
17which Moses took the children of Israel and visited the spot
18where Moses turned the rock to water and the mountain where
19Moses died; she also visited Switzerland, India, Saudi Arabia,
20Italy, Jordan, and Puerto Rico; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Mamie Clayborne Bolden is survived by her
22children, Richard (Fannie), Diane (Hollis Taylor Jr.),

1Roderick, and Pamela; her grandchildren, Francea Bolden,
2Andria Jones, Tanya Sanford (Carlos), and Rachel Taylor; her
3stepson, Henry Bolden Sr.; her brother, Calvin Clayborne; and a
4host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends; therefore,
5be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
8her family and friends, the passing of Mamie Clayborne Bolden;
9and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the family of Mamie Clayborne Bolden as a symbol
12of our sincere sympathy.
