SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Russell F. "Pat" Patterson, who passed
4away on December 19, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Russell Patterson was born on July 8, 1919, in
6Alton; he was the son of Russell and Nora Chappell Patterson;
7he married Lois Pauline "Polly" George of Dardanelle, Arkansas,
8in Alton on Easter Sunday in 1943; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Russell Patterson was a graduate of Alton High
10School; he subsequently attended Shurtleff College (Southern
11Illinois University); and
 
12    WHEREAS, Russell Patterson served his country with pride
13and distinction as a member of the 3rd Armored Division during
14World War II; during his stint with the Army, he took part in
15the invasion of Normandy, the subsequent advance through
16France, and the attack on the Rhineland; while on a
17reconnaissance mission in March of 1945 near Paderborn,
18Germany, he was wounded in action and captured by German
19forces; he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart,
20among many other military decorations, for his meritorious
21service; and

1    WHEREAS, After returning from his service in the Army,
2Russell Patterson was employed as an electrician for Standard
3Oil in Wood River; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Russell Patterson was active in Alton sports as a
5member of the city softball league and was an avid golfer with
6his wife; he was also a lifelong member of the Cherry Street
7Baptist Church and sang with the Light Opera Guild of St. Louis
8for several years; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Russell Patterson was preceded in death by his
10wife; his daughter, Barbara Schrimpf; and his brothers,
11Kenneth, George, and Harold; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Russell Patterson is survived by his daughters and
13sons-in-law, Sandra Moyer and her husband, Barry, and Jane
14VanWinkle and her husband, David; his grandchildren, Susan
15Marie (Schrimpf) Hatfield, Matthew William Schrimpf, Sarah Ann
16(Moyer) Sanders, Lindsay Nicole (Parrish) Jones, and Megan
17Elise (Moyer) Baiter; his great-grandchildren; his sister,
18Mary (Patterson) Griffin; and his dedicated caregiver and
19loving friend, Pam Tite; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
22his family and friends, the passing of Russell F. "Pat"

2    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3presented to the family of Russell Patterson as an expression
4of our sympathy.
