1     AN ACT concerning local government.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Counties Code is amended by changing
5 Sections 5-27001 and 5-27002 as follows:
 
6     (55 ILCS 5/5-27001)  (from Ch. 34, par. 5-27001)
7     Sec. 5-27001. Appointment of person to have charge of
8 interment. Each county board shall designate some suitable
9 person or persons to serve without compensation, who shall
10 cause to be properly interred the body of any honorably
11 discharged veteran who served in the army or navy of the United
12 States during the Civil War, Spanish-American War, Philippine
13 Insurrection, Boxer Uprising in China, or with the armed forces
14 of the United States in World War I, World War II, during the
15 national emergency between June 25, 1950 and January 31, 1955,
16 or during the Viet Nam Conflict between January 1, 1961 and May
17 7, 1975, or with the armed forces of the United States in any
18 congressionally sanctioned war or conflict after the Viet Nam
19 Conflict, or their mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, widows,
20 widowers or minor children, who may hereafter die in such
21 county, without having sufficient means to defray the funeral
22 expenses. This Division shall not apply to such mothers,
23 fathers, husbands, wives, widows or widowers, if they were

1 recipients of public assistance at the time of death.

4     Sec. 5-27002. Fees. The expense of such burial shall not
5 exceed the sum of $900 $600; such burial shall not be made in
6 any cemetery or burial ground used exclusively for the burial
7 of the pauper dead, or in that portion of any burial ground so
8 used. In case relatives of the deceased, who are unable to bear
9 the expenses of burial, desire to conduct the funeral, they may
10 be allowed to do so, and the expense thereof shall be paid as
11 hereinafter provided.
