HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, In 1830 the early pioneers began to arrive to
3 settle on the land that would someday become the Village of
4 Glendale Heights; remnants of their homesteads remain present
5 in the community today; and
 
6     WHEREAS, On July 13, 1959, the DuPage Board of Elections
7 canvassed the vote on a ballot to incorporate the Village of
8 Glendale, and certified that a majority of the 40 votes cast
9 were in favor of incorporating the Village of Glendale as an
10 Illinois municipal corporation; the total population of the
11 Village was 104; and
 
12     WHEREAS, On August 22, 1959, the first local election was
13 held for the election of the first Village President, Village
14 Clerk, Police Magistrate, and a six-member Board of Trustees;
15 and
 
16     WHEREAS, On September 1, 1959 the Village Board held their
17 first meeting at the home of the newly elected Village
18 President, Anthony Larry; the first ordinance to be passed was
19 to adopt a building code; and
 
20     WHEREAS, The Village was named Glendale because it was
21 situated between the Village of Glen Ellyn on the south and the

1 Village of Bloomingdale on the north; it was soon discovered
2 that there was already another town in the Illinois named
3 Glendale, therefore "Heights" was later added in March, 1960;
4 and
 
5     WHEREAS, The Village of Glendale Heights experienced
6 vigorous growth and development following its incorporation;
7 in 1970 the Village adopted its first slogan "A Proud and
8 Progressive Village"; and
 
9     WHEREAS, One of the key assets of the Village is its
10 location on the regional highway network which has helped the
11 community to become a desirable place in which live, work, and
12 do business; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Over the past 50 years since its incorporation,
14 the Village has grown into a mature community with a current
15 population estimated at 32,500 residents; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Today, the Village of Glendale Heights has a
17 stable economy where numerous retail shopping centers and
18 businesses totaling approximately 1,420,000 square feet have
19 opened to provide essential goods and services to the community
20 and the region; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Today, there are nine industrial business parks

1 totaling 465 acres in the community where numerous national
2 firms and facilities have located, offering excellent
3 employment opportunities to the Village residents and the
4 surrounding areas; and
5     WHEREAS, Today, the Village of Glendale Heights is a Home
6 Rule community boasting government facilities that include a
7 Civic Center that houses all main government offices and the
8 Police Department, a Public Works Facility that operates the
9 local water supply, sanitary sewer system and wastewater
10 treatment plant, and maintains approximately 80 miles of local
11 roads; and
 
12      WHEREAS, The Village of Glendale Heights owns, operates,
13 and maintains its own Parks & Recreation programs, including
14 the Sports Hub Facility, 22 parks and playgrounds totaling 271
15 acres including a 64 acre central community park, and an
16 18-hole golf course and banquet facility; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Today, there are nine elementary schools, one
18 parochial school, and Universal Technical Institute, one of the
19 largest vocational schools in the country, is located in the
20 Village; high school and college age students attend schools
21 located in nearby towns; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Today, the Village of Glendale heights is served
23 by the Glenside Public Library District, and two Fire

1 Protections Districts, Glenside FPD, and Bloomingdale FPD; the
2 Adventist GlenOaks Hospital located in the community provides
3 medical care, including emergency care, in their
4 state-of-the-art facility which offers a "no waiting"
5 treatment process; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The Village of Glendale Heights has received four
7 Governor's Home-Town Awards that celebrate the volunteer
8 efforts of its residents for successful community projects,
9 including Christmas Sharing, Safety Town, Veterans Memorial
10 Park, and the Family Health & Safety Fair; and
 
11     WHEREAS, To commemorate the 50th anniversary of its
12 incorporation, the Village of Glendale Heights will host a
13 year-long celebration under the theme "Celebrating the Past and
14 Creating the Future"; therefore, be it
 
15     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
17 wish the citizens of Glendale Heights a joyous time as they
18 celebrate this anniversary year; and be it further
 
19     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to Village President Linda Jackson as a symbol of our
21 respect and esteem.
