HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to commend Carl Painter of Lake Villa on the occasion of the courage and bravery he exhibited when he saved the life of an elderly woman on May 21, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Carl Painter has been an employee of the Lake County Housing Authority for 18 years; he works as a maintenance supervisor at the Beach Haven Towers senior living center in Round Lake Beach; and

WHEREAS, On May 21, 2009, Carl Painter responded to a fire alarm at Beach Haven Towers; upon arrival, he found an elderly resident's second-story apartment on fire and the woman lying on the floor after slipping and falling; and

WHEREAS, At great peril to himself, Carl Painter rescued the elderly woman from the burning apartment, then returned to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher; despite his best efforts, he was unable to extinguish the fire completely before being overcome by smoke; upon finding Mr. Painter, arriving firefighters assisted him down the steps; he was then taken to Condell Hospital's intensive care unit, where he was put on a ventilator; and

WHEREAS, As a result of smoke inhalation, carbon monoxide poisoning, and cyanide poisoning, Carl Painter eventually went into a coma for 3 days; doctors were unsure if Mr. Painter would survive from his extensive injuries; fortunately, with his family at his side, Mr. Painter regained consciousness and has since made a full recovery; and

WHEREAS, Carl Painter has been honored for his heroism by the Village of Round Lake Beach and the residents of Beach Haven Towers with plaques; in addition, the Lake County Housing Authority gave Mr. Painter a certificate and named him "employee of the month"; and

WHEREAS, The members of the body, Carl Painter's family and friends, the residents of Beach Haven Towers, and Mr. Painter's community are all proud of the exceptional heroism Mr. Painter exhibited in saving another person's life at great risk of losing his own; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we commend Carl Painter on the occasion of his courageous act and wish him great success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Carl Painter as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
