HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to commemorate the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Metra Rock Island District Lovana S. "Lou" Jones/Bronzeville Station, named in honor of the late Representative; and

WHEREAS, The Metra board voted to name the station, located at 35th Street and Federal Street, the "Lovana S. (Lou) Jones/Bronzeville Metra Station" after an aggressive push by United States Representative Bobby Rush; and

WHEREAS, Representative Rush submitted a formal request to the Metra Board to name the new Metra stop in honor of the late former Assistant House Majority Leader, who served many years in the Illinois General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, Representative Jones, who spent nearly 20 years in the Illinois Legislature speaking up for abused children and ex-convicts, passed away in May of 2006; and

WHEREAS, Representative Jones was known to everyone as "Lou" and chaired the House Committee on Public Safety while in office; and

WHEREAS, In 2004, Metra agreed to support the construction of the station; earlier this year, Representative Rush worked aggressively to pass the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), which provided a significant boost to the Metra station project by injecting $7.5 million in economic stimulus dollars into the construction project; groundbreaking on the new project, which will generate 100 construction jobs, will take place on June 29, 2009; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we commemorate the legacy of our late former colleague and friend Representative Lou Jones and are pleased to see her memory honored in this special way; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the late Representative Lou Jones as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
