HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of the Village of Niles on the occasion of the Niles Public Library District's 50th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, The history of the Niles Public Library began on April 18, 1959, when a referendum was passed to establish the Niles Public Library District; the new library was open 13 hours a week and had 3,600 books and 750 family cards; and

WHEREAS, Due to population growth and the need to provide quality public library service, the Niles Public Library completed an expansion project that resulted in adding approximately 30,000 square feet to the existing building in October of 1998; and

WHEREAS, The Niles Public Library District seeks to enrich the community by meeting its informational, educational, cultural and recreational needs by providing a wide variety of materials, resources, and services, as well as a friendly, experienced, and professional staff in a safe and welcoming environment; and

WHEREAS, Today, the Niles Public Library District serves over 58,000 residents in Niles and parts of unincorporated Des Plaines and Glenview; with a collection of more than 275,000 items, the library's annual circulation exceeds 1.2 million loans; in addition, the library's membership in the North Suburban Library System and ILLINET (the Illinois Network of Libraries) provides patrons with additional access to millions of items owned by other libraries; and

WHEREAS, The Niles Public Library District has served as a beacon of knowledge to the residents of Niles and its surrounding communities, a service that is invaluable to the growth and prosperity of the citizens of this State; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the citizens of the Village of Niles on the occasion of the Niles Public Library District's 50th anniversary; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dennis O'Donovan, President of the Niles Library Board, as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
