HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The naming of school buildings, facilities, and grounds is an important matter that deserves thoughtful attention; and

WHEREAS, The naming of buildings and other facilities in a school district provides an opportunity to recognize the contributions of individuals or groups to education and to the life of communities or to recognize the significance of the neighborhood area or community where a school resides; and

WHEREAS, It is in the best interest of all of this State's citizens for school districts to establish an equitable process by which local individuals can continue to assume their responsibility for naming school facilities; and

WHEREAS, In recognition that the name for a school building, facility, or ground reflects on its public image, the primary consideration of school districts and individuals in selecting names or renaming buildings, facilities, or grounds should be in a manner that enhances the credibility and stature of the school building, facility, or ground; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge school districts to avoid selecting school names supportive of individuals or entities considered to be in current or past military conflict with the State of Illinois or the United States of America; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be delivered to the Illinois Statewide School Management Alliance.
