HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to recognize the 10th anniversary of the Chicago Theatre District; and

WHEREAS, The major impetus behind the creation of the Chicago Theatre District was the founding of Broadway in Chicago, which began in July of 2000 as a joint venture between the Nederlander Organization and Live Nation; Broadway in Chicago, along with the League of Chicago Theatres and the Goodman Theatre, worked tirelessly to create a national reputation for stage theatre in the City of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, The City of Chicago has seen great economic growth from the Chicago Theatre District and its productions; the district has more than 800 stage productions every year, which draw more than 5 million theater-goers across the city; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago Theatre District's productions help to bring tourists to the city, whose dollars support hotels, restaurants, museums, retail stores, and jobs in Chicago; the district has also provided jobs for actors, artistic designers, and others who work in the theater; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago Theatre District attracts new residents who come to the city looking for a vibrant arts scene and has enabled Chicago's reputation as an arts destination to grow; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago Theatre District has brought the eyes of the world upon the City of Chicago and its marvelous theatre productions; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the 10th anniversary of the Chicago Theatre District and congratulate the district's staff and performers on bringing entertainment and economic development to the people of Chicago; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we recognize and thank Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley for his leadership in the creation of the Chicago Theatre District and for his unwavering commitment to the arts; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and the organizers of Broadway in Chicago, the League of Chicago Theatres, and the Goodman Theatre.
