HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Robert M. Unger
4 upon his 64 years of continual service to the dental profession
5 and to the oral health needs of the citizens of Illinois; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Dr. Robert M. Unger was born to immigrant parents
7 in Chicago's Fueller Park neighborhood; he graduated from De La
8 Salle Institute in 1941; he attended Loyola University and
9 received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from its Chicago College
10 of Dental Surgery in 1946; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Upon completion of his military service he
12 established a dental practice on the southwest side of Chicago,
13 serving his patients for over sixty years; Dr. Robert M. Unger
14 has been married to his wife, Dorothy, for 61 years, and
15 together they raised seven children in the Garfield Park
16 neighborhood of Chicago; he has been an active member in the
17 St. Jane de Chantal Parish where he has served as an usher,
18 lector, and as a member of numerous committees since 1956; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Dr. Robert M. Unger was instrumental in the
20 fluoridation of the water supply in the State and the City of
21 Chicago; he served in the Chicago Department of Health; and he
22 provided free dental care to the students of the Lt. Joseph P.

1 Kennedy, Jr., School for the Mentally Challenged; and
 
2     WHEREAS, Dr. Robert M. Unger has served as an officer of
3 the Englewood Branch of the Chicago Dental Society and as its
4 President in 1964; he went on to serve as the Councilman of the
5 Illinois State Dental Society (ISDS), becoming an officer and
6 serving as the President of the Illinois State Dental Society
7 from 1972 to 1973; his devotion to the dental profession
8 continued by his serving as the second Vice President of the
9 American Dental Association from 1973 to 1974; and as the 8th
10 District Trustee of the American Dental Association from 1980
11 to 1986; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Dr. Robert M. Unger's appreciation of the
13 political process was instrumental in the formation of the
14 Legislative Interest Committee of Illinois Dentist (LICID); in
15 the early 1960s he traveled around the State of Illinois for
16 over two years convincing fellow dentists of the need to be an
17 active part in the political process; he was a long-term board
18 member of LICID and the ISDS Governmental Affairs Committee; he
19 is very proud to see LICID grow and transform into DENT-IL-PAC,
20 the leading voice in the promotion and protection of the oral
21 health of the citizens of Illinois; on the national level he
22 has served as a member of the American Dental Associations
23 Council on Governmental Affairs and as a member of the American
24 Dental Political Action Committees; and

1     WHEREAS, Upon his retirement from private practice in 2007,
2 Dr. Robert M. Unger remains active in organized dentistry and
3 continues to serve as a mentor to many inside and outside the
4 profession of dentistry; therefore, be it
 
5     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
7 congratulate Dr. Robert M. Unger for his lifetime of continual
8 service to the profession of dentistry and the citizens of the
9 State of Illinois; and be it further
 
10     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to Dr. Robert M. Unger as a symbol of our respect and
12 esteem.
