HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Karen J. Nichols on the occasion of her inauguration as President of the American Osteopathic Association in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nichols will be the first woman to serve as national President of the American Osteopathic Association since its creation 113 years ago; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nichols is a past president of the American College of Osteopathic Internists and the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association; she has also served as a trustee of the American Osteopathic Association for many years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nichols has served as the Dean of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University since 2002; she collaborates with her fellow deans of medical schools both in the State of Illinois and across the nation; and

WHEREAS, As Dean of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University, Dr. Nichols has focused greatly on increasing student, faculty, and alumni involvement in specialty and state medical societies, such as the Illinois Osteopathic Medical Society, who named her recipient of their highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, in 2003; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nichols has personally escorted busloads of Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine students to Springfield for Osteopathic Physicians Days at the Illinois State Capitol; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nichols' work as a Health Policy Fellow and as a national leader for the osteopathic medical profession has reinforced her understanding of the importance of physician legislative advocacy; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Karen J. Nichols on being elected by her peers as the President of the American Osteopathic Association and wish her continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Karen Nichols as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
