HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of the Village of Buffalo Grove for winning the 2010 Environmental Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association for the stabilization and naturalization of the White Pine Drainage Channel; and

WHEREAS, The Village of Buffalo Grove has actively worked on the implementation of a project that would address erosion and non-point source pollution along the White Pine, an urban drainage channel that discharges directly into Buffalo Creek and the Des Plaines River System, since early 2005; and

WHEREAS, The White Pine Drainage Channel project has incorporated numerous innovative restoration methods, such as the use of both native plant bio-engineering, along with traditional armoring techniques, to create a system that could withstand the volatile nature of the urban waterway; the addition of a pedestrian pathway along the channel and the installation of educational signage seeks to help to improve the public's awareness and understanding as to the importance of such restoration projects; embedded boulders were placed at the toe of the bank to reduce the shear stresses caused during high flow periods, while native plantings and turf reinforcing mats were designed and installed to further prevent erosion and to lock-in the boulder toe, providing for a cohesive and naturalized system; and

WHEREAS, In addition to the stream naturalization portion of the improvement, the project also constructed a bike path, which extended from the bike path system located on the northern side of Lions Park on the south and extending north along the White Pine Corridor to the Buffalo Grove Park District's Alcott facilities on the north side of Bernard Drive in Buffalo Grove; and

WHEREAS, The government and citizens of the Village of Buffalo Grove should take pride in this wonderful project and the example this project sets for other municipalities; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the citizens of the Village of Buffalo Grove for winning the 2010 Environmental Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association for the stabilization and naturalization of the White Pine Drainage Channel; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Buffalo Grove Village Board as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
