HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The 10th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Regiment was
3 formed by Presidential Proclamation by President Abraham
4 Lincoln in September 1861; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The Regiment of 12 companies was mustered into
6 service at Camp Butler from November 25, 1861, until November
7 22, 1865, during which period approximately 2,152 men served;
8 and
 
9     WHEREAS, The Regiment fought in Texas, on the banks of the
10 Mississippi, and in such places as Prairie Grove, Arkansas;
11 Vicksburg, Mississippi; and Milliken's Bend, Louisiana; and
 
12     WHEREAS, The Regiment lost a total of 290 soldiers during
13 service; one officer and 24 enlisted men were mortally wounded;
14 and 3 officers and 262 enlisted men died from disease,
15 accidents, and Confederate imprisonment; and
 
16     WHEREAS, The Regiment was mustered out of service on
17 November 22, 1865, in San Antonio, Texas, and the Regiment was
18 discharged at Camp Butler on January 6, 1866; and
 
19     WHEREAS, The Regiment was reborn by members of the 10th
20 Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Regiment in October 1984; and

1     WHEREAS, The 10th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Regiment
2 strives, through its reenactments, to provide enjoyable
3 opportunities for individuals and families to experience,
4 learn, and, in return, teach others about all aspects of life
5 in the mid-19th century; therefore, be it
 
6     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
8 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate March 25, 2010, as
9 the official date for the remustering of the 10th Illinois
10 Volunteer Cavalry Regiment in the State of Illinois and urge
11 the citizens of this State to educate themselves on the
12 historical importance and continued contributions of the 10th
13 Volunteer Cavalry; and be it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15 presented to the 10th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Regiment.
