HOUSE RESOLUTION 97

WHEREAS, In the last 5 years, according to a United States Department of Labor report presented to Congress in 2005, 5,690 veterans have lost their jobs in both the private and the public employment sectors while activated to serve a tour of duty; those numbers are expected to increase because, of the 300,000 deployed reservists, as many as 25,000 veterans were expected to return home in 2005 to reintegrate themselves back into civilian life after a tour of duty in the global war against terrorism; and

WHEREAS, In 2006, many reports of possible violations of the Veterans Preference Act and other laws providing for hiring preferences for service members were heard; and

WHEREAS, State of Illinois hiring practices should be monitored for compliance with State hiring preference laws; and

WHEREAS, State of Illinois hiring practices should be open to observation by the general public to curb violations of those hiring preference laws and to protect the integrity of veterans preference programs; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that in an attempt to improve our returning veterans' reintegration into civilian society, we urge the Department of Central Management Services to provide a monthly list of State job openings to the Department of Veterans' Affairs, the Department of Employment Security, and the Department of Military Affairs; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be delivered to the Governor, the Director of Central Management Services, the Director of Employment Security, the Director of Veterans' Affairs, and the Adjutant General.
