HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the staff of the Danville Area Community College Reader's Route program on the occasion of winning a 2007 Governor's Home Town Award for their efforts to combat adult illiteracy; and

WHEREAS, The Governor's Home Town Awards are given each year by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to honor volunteer efforts that make a difference in the community and improve the quality of life for its residents; and

WHEREAS, The Reader's Route program is a part of Danville Area Community College's adult education division and is funded by grants from the Illinois Secretary of State's office and the Illinois Community College Board; and

WHEREAS, The Reader's Route program tutors people who are 16 and older, who are not enrolled in a traditional school, with basic reading and math skills; the program also assists those who speak with English as a second language, as well as preparation for obtaining American citizenship and those taking GED or adult basic education classes at Danville Area Community College; the program has assisted 3,976 adult learners since its inception in 1985; and

WHEREAS, The Reader's Route program has provided an essential service to those who have had literacy problems and has enabled them to function within our society as independent citizens; the program's volunteers are models of selflessness and generosity to the people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the staff of the Danville Area Community College Reader's Route program on the occasion of winning a 2007 Governor's Home Town Award and wish them continued success in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to a representative of the Danville Area Community College Reader's Route program as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
