HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate Jim Culbertson, director
4 and conductor, and the members of the Decatur Municipal Band as
5 they celebrate the 150th anniversary of the band; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The Decatur Municipal Band was formed by nine
7 charter members on September 19, 1857, making it one of the
8 oldest non-military bands in continuous service in the United
9 States and Canada; and
 
10     WHEREAS, The Band has been known by many names, including
11 the Decatur Brass Band, Decatur Comet Band, and Decatur Silver
12 Band; Andrew Goodman became the conductor in 1871 and served as
13 director until his retirement in 1880; it was known as the
14 Goodman Band until it was chartered with the City of Decatur in
15 1942 and officially designated the Decatur Municipal Band; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Robert Walter from 1887 to
17 1928, the band reached new heights, marching in President
18 McKinley's inaugural parade as the Illinois National Guard 4th
19 Infantry Regimental Band, performing at the dedication of the
20 Illinois Building at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904, and
21 being guest performers at the New Harmony, Indiana Centennial
22 Celebration in 1914; and

1     WHEREAS, Though organized as a non-military band, the band
2 was mustered into the Illinois National Guard 4th Infantry
3 during the Spanish-American War and became the regimental band;
4 as a regimental band, it saw active duty during the Civil War,
5 the Spanish-American War, the Mexican Border War, and World War
6 I, when the band became the National Guard 130th Infantry Band;
7 and
 
8     WHEREAS, The current Decatur Municipal Band has been under
9 the direction of Jim Culbertson since 1979; it is composed of
10 high school and college students, and adults from all walks of
11 life who play for little money but great satisfaction in
12 playing great music for the Decatur community; therefore, be it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
15 congratulate the conductor and members of the Decatur Municipal
16 Band as they celebrate this special anniversary; and be it
17 further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to Jim Culbertson, Musical Director and Conductor of
20 the Decatur Municipal Band, as a symbol of our respect and
21 esteem.
