HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate the residents of
4 the City of Wheaton on the occasion of the city's
5 sesquicentennial anniversary on February 24, 2009; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The City of Wheaton is a distinctive community of
7 55,000 residents, known for its top-ranked schools,
8 outstanding parks and library, and diverse group of
9 organizations; and
 
10     WHEREAS, The rich history of the City of Wheaton began when
11 the city's founders, Erastus Gary, Jesse Wheaton, and Warren
12 Wheaton, purchased the land that became Wheaton in 1837 and
13 offered free land for the railroad to run through the center of
14 town; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Following their deal with the railroad, the
16 founders platted the original 10 blocks of land and offered
17 free land to people who were willing to build houses or
18 buildings on the lots immediately, spurring the growth that
19 Wheaton needed to create a thriving community; this growth
20 culminated in Wheaton being incorporated as an Illinois village
21 on February 24, 1859; and

1     WHEREAS, In 1867, Wheaton was established as the seat of
2 the DuPage County government; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Recently, the City of Wheaton has been named one
4 of Money Magazine's best places to live in the United States
5 and the healthiest of Chicago's largest suburbs by Chicago
6 Magazine based on the city's public health, safety, and
7 environment, a measure of the commitment to quality that the
8 city's government and residents share; therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11 congratulate the residents of the City of Wheaton on the
12 occasion of the city's sesquicentennial anniversary and wish
13 them continued success and happiness in the future; and be it
14 further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to Michael J. Gresk, Mayor of the City of Wheaton, as
17 a symbol of our esteem and respect.
