HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Aledo, Illinois has become famous for the annual
3 Rhubarb Festival; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Darlene Johnson is the founder of the Rhubarb
5 Festival, she started the festival in 1990 in her kitchen, with
6 50 people in attendance; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The Festival has grown, today attracting from
8 10,000 to 15,000 people who come to sample and test rhubarb
9 dishes, buy pies, and celebrate all that is rhubarb; and
 
10     WHEREAS, In 2006, people attended the Festival from over 19
11 states, including Hawaii and Japan; 2,078 homemade rhubarb pies
12 were sold during the Festival; and
 
13     WHEREAS, The 2006 Festival generated $28,145 for Aledo's
14 civic organizations and churches that were a part of the
15 Festival; and
 
16     WHEREAS, The Festival has captured media attention, with
17 features in several newspapers and magazines, as well as on
18 television and radio; and
 
19     WHEREAS, The Aledo Rhubarb Festival centers around two

1 goals, family fun and the promotion of the community; this
2 year's festival will be held June 2nd; therefore, be it
 
3     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
5 proclaim Aledo as the Rhubarb Capital of the Illinois; and be
6 it further
 
7     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8 presented to Darlene Johnson, founder of the Rhubarb Festival.
