HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Amy Pugeda on the
4 occasion of winning the Freedoms Foundation George Washington
5 Honor Medal award for her notebook titled "The Balance of
6 Scholarship & Citizenship"; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Amy Pugeda currently serves as a 3rd grade teacher
8 at Johnson-Wabash Elementary School, a position she has worked
9 at since the school's opening in August of 2001; the school's
10 district, the Ferguson-Florissant School District, is the only
11 predominately African-American school district to be fully
12 accredited in North St. Louis, Missouri; and
 
13     WHEREAS, During her 13 years of public service, Amy Pugeda
14 has made it her mission to integrate the values of self-pride,
15 responsible citizenship, patriotism, and strong academics into
16 her classroom in order to enable future generations to become
17 the solid leaders and productive members of society that will
18 be required for the enduring strength of the nation; in
19 furtherance of these goals, her classroom is a positive
20 environment where learning, high standards, achievement, and
21 character development are held in equally high regards; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Amy Pugeda and her students participate in

1 numerous activities in order to expose the children to
2 important facets of our society; her class actively
3 participates in the St. Louis Post Dispatch's Newspapers for
4 Education program, where the class reads the newspaper in order
5 to gain awareness of current events and the world around them;
6 the class hosts many guest speakers, who help the children
7 develop a knowledge of careers; the class has also adopted a
8 United States Air Force soldier overseas to communicate with
9 and has communicated with United States Representative William
10 "Lacy" Clay, Jr. to express their thoughts and ides to improve
11 the environment; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Amy Pugeda currently serves as the student council
13 leader at Johnson-Wabash Elementary School; as student council
14 leader, she has participated in numerous charitable events at
15 the school, including the raising of over $1,000 in charitable
16 donations for the American Diabetes Association and the
17 Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and participation in The Power of
18 11 Cents: A Celebration of Our Nation's Patriotism fund; the
19 class has also organized and conducted a successful food drive
20 for a local food pantry and a fundraising drive to provide
21 hats, scarves, mittens, socks, and gift cards for those in need
22 at the school; and
 
23     WHEREAS, Amy Pugeda's students excel in their studies as a
24 result of her inspired leadership; her class has been

1 recognized for scoring in the Top Ten for Missouri for their
2 standardized Missouri Assessment Program scores and have
3 achieved reading gains of at least one year's growth for 100
4 percent of her class; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Amy Pugeda's dedication to her profession, her
6 willingness to serve her community, and her unwavering
7 patriotism make her a model for the people of the State of
8 Illinois; therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11 congratulate Amy Pugeda on the occasion of winning the Freedoms
12 Foundation George Washington Honor Medal award and wish her
13 continued success and happiness in the future; and be it
14 further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to Amy Pugeda as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
