HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Manny Shellist for the successful creation and touring of his Gettysburg Address wood carving; and

WHEREAS, Manny Shellist, a member of the Glenview Senior Club, conceived the idea for the Gettysburg Address wood carving; utilizing 28 strips of basswood, each 24 inches wide by 3 inches high, he personally carved the 1,211 individual 3/4-inch high letters which make up the 217 words contained in the historic document; Bob Crampton and Paul Gotschewski, also members of the Glenview Senior Club, meticulously planned and executed the detailed finishing and assembly of the final piece, which stands 8 feet tall; and

WHEREAS, Following the completion of the Gettysburg Address wood carving, the piece has embarked on a tour to show off this wonderful carving at various tourist destinations and public buildings, including The Grove, Sun City in Huntley, Wagner Farm, Ravinia, Attea Middle School, Springman Middle School, and the Glenview Public Library; and

WHEREAS, The superb craftsmanship and historical significance of the Gettysburg Address wood carving is worthy of the greatest respect; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Manny Shellist for the successful creation and touring of his Gettysburg Address wood carving and wish him continued success and happiness with his future projects; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Manny Shellist as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
