HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Shirley L. Myers on the occasion of being the recipient of the Elmhurst Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her 35 years of dedicated service to the people of Elmhurst; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Myers was born on July 13, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; she married Thomas O. Myers Jr. on May 9, 1970; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Myers earned her bachelor's degree in group work from George Williams College in June of 1966 and her master's degree in gerontology administration from Louis University in June of 1992; in pursuit of further knowledge, she attends seminars given by the U.S. Department of Aging, the Illinois Area Agency on Aging, and the Aging Resources and Services Training Series done by Midwestern University; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Myers has served as president or chairperson of the Elmhurst American Legion Auxiliary, the Elmhurst Symphony Auxiliary, First Congregational Church of Christ Deaconate Board, Children's Home and Aid Society of Illinois: Elmhurst Auxiliary, Elmhurst Afternoon Women's Club, and as a long-standing chairperson of the Elmhurst Senior Citizens Commission; expanding her borders, she has also served for five years on the board of directors with Healthy DuPage; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Myers' professional career has spanned many civic organizations, including the Salvation Army Settlement House, Christopher Settlement House, South Shore YMCA, Krannert Family YMCA (Indianapolis, Indiana), and the Elmhurst Family YMCA; she also works in the family business, the Thomas O. Myers Real Estate Organization, along with raising her two sons, Paul and David; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Myers has devoted much of her time and energy advocating for the needs of Elmhurst's senior citizens; her work with organizations such as Seniors and Lawmakers Together (SALT) and her service on the board of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital's Home Health Care and Hospice Board has proven invaluable towards this cause; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Myers has been awarded both the Elmhurst College Founders Medal and the City of Elmhurst Character Counts Service Award in recognition of her civic pride, philanthropy, and support of Elmhurst; and

WHEREAS, Shirley Myers' dedication to the people of Elmhurst and her willingness to help those in need serves as a model of hard work, integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Shirley L. Myers on the occasion of being the recipient of the Elmhurst Jaycees Distinguished Service Award and wish her continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Shirley L. Myers as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
