SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Karla Kay Chew of Oak Park, who passed
4away on June 8, 2023 at the age of 83; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Karla Chew was born on July 18, 1939, and she grew
6up in rural, central Michigan; she graduated as valedictorian
7of her high school class, where she was a dedicated member of
8the band, choir, and the basketball and cheerleading teams;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Karla Chew earned a Bachelor of Arts in
11Mathematics from Michigan State University and a Master of
12Business Administration from Sangamon State University,
13working as a computer programmer while pursuing the latter
14degree and remaining in the field well afterwards; she retired
15from the White Cap Company in Chicago after 20-plus years of
16service; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Karla Chew was a dedicated and lifelong
18volunteer, committing her time to the Third Unitarian Church's
19Austin Scholars Awards Program, the Columbus Park Food Pantry,
20PADS, the Sierra Club, and Habitat for Humanity; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Karla Chew was similarly active in the many

1hobbies she maintained throughout her life; she was a skilled
2biker, skier, canoe rower, tennis player, and outdoorswoman;
3her energetic nature suited her as a grandmother, and she was
4often seen cheering on her grandchildren at their sporting
5events and concerts; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Karla Chew became involved in local politics and
7was a dear friend and volunteer of the Democratic Party of Oak
8Park, donating her time to phone banking and canvassing for
9candidates who also believed in social justice; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Karla Chew was preceded in death by her husband,
11Ronald Chew; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Karla Chew is survived by her children, Ryan
13(Lindsay Beller) Chew and Tracey (Glenn) Kugelard; her
14grandchildren, Jackson Kugelard, Carter Kugelard, Tabitha
15Chew, and Nora Chew; her sisters-in-law, Barbara (David) Roy
16and Nancy (Gerald) Kitch; her nieces and nephews, Rusty (Beth)
17Kitch, Barry (Ann Celi) Kitch, and Saundi (Christian)
18Theodossiou; and her Irish Doodle, Mollie; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Karla Kay Chew and extend our sincere condolences to her
22family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
