HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, National Catholic Schools Week, the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States, began in 1974; it begins on the last Sunday in January and runs all week; and

WHEREAS, Schools typically observe the annual celebration with masses, open houses, and other activities for students, families, parishioners, and community members; through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to churches, communities, and the nation; and

WHEREAS, The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2019 was "Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed"; the theme encompasses the core values that can be found in Catholic schools across the country; and

WHEREAS, Catholic Schools in Illinois are recognized for their academic excellence and their ability to provide students with an exceptional scholastic experience; In Illinois, Catholic schools like St. Philip Neri instill the core values of mercy, integrity, and service that results in graduates being well prepared for secondary education and lifelong learning; and

WHEREAS, St. Philip Neri has been a strong presence in the South Shore Community since it first opened in 1913; its mission is to provide a high-quality 21st century Catholic STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) education to children of diverse religious affiliations; and

WHEREAS, St. Philip Neri School is prepared to carry on its mission in timely and relevant ways, while continuing to teach and nurture students in a strong curriculum; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we commend Catholic schools in Illinois as they teach students to become future leaders, faith-filled disciples, and enriched citizens of their communities, and we recognize St. Philip Neri for the role it plays in the Catholic education of students in Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to St. Philip Neri School.
