HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, After 25 years of dedicated service to Tishman Construction Corporation (TCC), Ronald E. Materick, P.E., has retired from his positions as President of the Western Region and Executive Vice President of Tishman Realty & Construction Co., Inc.; and

WHEREAS, A native of Brantford, Ontario, Canada, Mr. Materick earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering from McMaster University in Ontario, where he received the "Professional Engineer's Gold Medal for Academic Achievement"; he went on to gain a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago and attended a summer course in Construction Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and

WHEREAS, After rising through the ranks of two established construction organizations, he joined Tishman in 1979 as President and COO of the Midwest Region; as the head of the Chicago Office, his responsibilities extended to all Tishman activities across 20 states; at the time of his arrival, there were only eight Tishman staff members based in Chicago; during his tenure, he recruited some of the finest available talent across multiple disciplines to build that office into what it is today; the office oversaw a ten-fold increase in annual construction volume from approximately $30 million to $300 million and a proportionate increase in profitability; and

WHEREAS, In 1998, Mr. Materick assumed responsibility for all of Tishman's Western Region operations, extending from the Allegheny Mountains in the east to Hawaii in the west; in this leadership capacity, he has overseen the planning and construction of a diverse roster of projects totaling several billion dollars, including Gateway IV, PPG Place, Metropolitan Square in downtown St. Louis, Arlington International Racecourse, Hotel Nikko (now the Westin River North), the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers, the Chicago Public Schools Capital Improvement Program, the Chicago Housing Authority Capital Improvement Program, and McCormick Place West; and

WHEREAS, More than just a builder, Mr. Materick has dedicated significant time, energy, and resources to industry-related and altruistic pursuits; described by colleagues as being "consistent, dependable, and unswerving", these character traits have manifested themselves in his life outside of Tishman as well; he is a member and former Chairman of the Building Industry Council of the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois, working to preserve and restore Chicago's landmark and historic buildings; he sits on the Board of Directors of the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority and is a founding member of the Chicago Construction & Real Estate Council of the City of Hope; in 1991, he received the organization's "Spirit of Life Award" in recognition of his outstanding career achievements; in 1999, he was named "Chicago's Contractor of the Year" by the Coalition for United Community Action; in conjunction with that award, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley proclaimed June 26, 1999, to be "Ronald E. Materick Day" in the city; and

WHEREAS, Other philanthropic endeavors include sponsoring the Ronald E. Materick Scholarship program at his alma mater, McMaster University, and the Ronald E. Materick Bursaries through McMaster Financial Aid and the Province of Ontario; he also established a fellowship in his name to fund the research and treatment of childhood leukemia at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Materick looks forward to spending time with his family; he and his wife Karen have been married for 43 years; they have two grown sons, J. Bradley, age 31, and Craig, age 29, as well as a 4-year-old granddaughter, Katie; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Ronald E. Materick, P.E., on the occasion of his retirement after 25 years of service at Tishman Construction Corporation, and we salute his many accomplishments during that time; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to him as an expression of our respect and esteem and with best wishes for a relaxing retirement.
