HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Fern Gregg of Goreville was presented with a Governor's Unique Achievement Award on Wednesday, October 5, 2005, in Springfield; she was nominated for the award by the Egyptian Area Agency on Aging; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Gregg started her new endeavor as a dedicated Red Cross volunteer in 1998 when she was 78 years old; she is now age 83, still working tirelessly for the Red Cross and assisting the people around her; before starting with the Red Cross, she worked for 18 years as an office manager for the Southern Baptist Student Center and dormitory on the SIUC College campus; and

WHEREAS, She is not a stranger to hard work and still has more energy than anyone can imagine; since becoming a Red Cross volunteer, she has served not only the communities in the 14 counties of southern Illinois, but also in disaster situations around the country, including at Ground Zero after September 11, 2001, and in Alabama, Louisiana, Minnesota, and Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, Senior adults who have suffered a disaster often will not seek the help they need because they feel the younger families are in more need of the assistance offered; Ms. Gregg serves as a mentor for these seniors and lovingly encourages them to seek help; she is well-respected by her peers and colleagues alike; and

WHEREAS, Her strong belief in community is shared at various health fairs and speaking engagements; she holds down the Red Cross office when the manager and other key leadership must be away and helps out with day-to-day operations; she also volunteers as head of the library in her church and is very committed to helping both in her church and community; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Fern Gregg on being a recipient of the Governor's Unique Achievement Award, and we thank her for the many hours of devoted community service that she puts in on daily basis; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Ms. Gregg as an expression of our respect and esteem.
