| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of R. Emmett Fitzgerald, who passed away | 4 | | on January 17, 2021; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Emmett Fitzgerald was born in Alton to Daniel M. | 6 | | and Genevieve Degnan Fitzgerald on February 27, 1926; he | 7 | | attended St. Patrick's Grade School and Marquette Catholic | 8 | | High School in Alton; he served in the U.S. Navy during World | 9 | | War II from 1944 to 1946; he earned his bachelor's degree from | 10 | | the University of Notre Dame and his Juris Doctorate from the | 11 | | Notre Dame Law School; he married Joan Marie Garrow at Queen of | 12 | | Martyrs Catholic Church in Chicago on May 7, 1955, and she | 13 | | preceded him in death on February 13, 2011; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Emmett Fitzgerald began his legal career in | 15 | | Chicago as a law clerk for the late Justice Roger J. Kiley, who | 16 | | later served on the U.S. Court of Appeals in Chicago; he | 17 | | returned to Alton in 1953, where he became an associate at the | 18 | | law firm of Virley, Eastman and Schlafly, which later became | 19 | | Schlafly, Godfrey and Fitzgerald and still later became | 20 | | Hoagland, Fitzgerald, Smith and Pranaitis, for a total of 64 | 21 | | years; and
| 22 | | WHEREAS, Emmett Fitzgerald belonged to a number of |

| 1 | | organizations, including the Alton Knights of Columbus, the | 2 | | American Legion, and the Alton-Wood River and Illinois State | 3 | | Bar Associations; he served on various boards, including St. | 4 | | Patrick's, St. Joseph's, St. Mary's, Marquette High School, | 5 | | Ursuline Convent, St. Anthony's Hospital, and the Alton | 6 | | Foundation; he also served on the Board of Directors of First | 7 | | National Bank, Mercantile Bank, and U.S. Bank in Alton; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Emmett Fitzgerald was preceded in death by his | 9 | | parents; his wife; and his siblings and their respective | 10 | | spouses, Daniel Jr., John (Helen), Genevieve (Harry) Kulp, | 11 | | Magalene, Edward (Marguerite), James (Katherine), Rosemary | 12 | | (James) Gilderslieve, and Margaret (James) Dimitroff; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Emmett Fitzgerald is survived by his children, | 14 | | Timothy (Kelly), Michael (Sue), Kathleen, Peter (Michelle), | 15 | | Daniel (Stephanie), and Maura (John) Sedlack; his | 16 | | grandchildren, Christopher Fitzgerald, Ryan Fitzgerald, | 17 | | Michael S. (Kelly) Fitzgerald, David (Catherine) Fitzgerald, | 18 | | Molly (Troy) Ferguson, Patrick (Laura) Fitzgerald, Joseph | 19 | | Fitzgerald, Maria and Jane Fitzgerald, Katherine, Daniel, and | 20 | | Mary Therese, and John E. Sedlack; and his nine | 21 | | great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
