HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Mira Weber on her
4impressive tenure as principal at Agassiz Elementary School;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Mira Weber began her teaching career in 1999 as a
7special education teacher in Chicago; in January 2000, she
8transferred to Agassiz Elementary School, where she spent the
9next six years, three teaching special education students in
10middle school and then three teaching general education
11primary age students; she completed her principal residency
12with LAUNCH (Leadership Academy and Urban Network Chicago) and
13became the principal at Agassiz Elementary School; and
 
14    WHEREAS, During her time as principal of Agassiz
15Elementary School, Mira Weber has doubled its enrollment,
16maintained a diverse student body, served families from over
1740 Chicagoland zip codes, completed over seven million dollars
18in capital renovations, and gained authorization as an IB
19World School PreK-8th, one of only nine in CPS; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Through Mira Webers's leadership, Agassiz
21Elementary School became the first CPS school to address its
22namesake's history of racism through a student-based inquiry

1process; she spearheaded a campaign to rename the school after
2someone who would offer inspiration to the students and
3community; after taking into account student, parent, and
4staff opinions, the school is in transition to become Harriet
5Tubman School; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Mira Weber grew up in Minnesota and was the
7oldest child of three; her siblings have multiple disabilities
8that heavily impacted their education and educational
9experiences, and it was through them and through watching her
10parents advocate for them that the foundation for her belief
11in the rights and high expectations for all children was
12formed; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Mira Weber has two boys of her own, ages 9 and 10,
14who attend Agassiz Elementary school, and she will forever be
15invested in her community; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
17HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18we congratulate Mira Weber on her impressive tenure as
19principal at Agassiz Elementary School, and we wish her the
20best in all her future endeavors; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to Mira Weber as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
