SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate were saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Peter J. McFarlane of Godfrey on May 18, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Peter McFarlane was born Jan. 27, 1918, in Moline the son of the late John and Cora (Davis) McFarlane; he married the former Bertha Lucille Biondolino on December 26, 1942, at the former St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Alton; and

WHEREAS, A longtime Alton area physician, he was a graduate of Marquette Catholic High School, Shurtleff College, and the University of Illinois Medical School; he served his internship at St. Margaret's Hospital in Hammond, Indiana, and his residency at Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver, Colorado; and

WHEREAS, Dr. McFarlane served his country in the United States Army Medical Corps during World War II and began his Alton medical practice in 1952, retiring in 1984; he served as chief of obstetrics and chief of staff at the former St. Joseph's Hospital in Alton and remained as a medical consultant at St. Anthony's until 2000; and

WHEREAS, He was a longtime member of the former St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Alton and St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey; he was also a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology; and

WHEREAS, Dr. McFarlane was devoted to his family; in his spare time he enjoyed carpentry, reading, and dancing; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Peter McFarlane will be deeply felt by many, especially his beloved wife of nearly 62 years, Bertha; his 11 children and their spouses, Margaret Guccione, John and Linda McFarlane, Peter and Pam McFarlane, Thomas and Mary McFarlane, Paul and Valerie McFarlane, Anne and Ron Mangus, James and LuAnn McFarlane, Mary and Jeff Vaughn, Joseph and Chris McFarlane, Andrew and Cathy McFarlane, and Robert and Josephine McFarlane; his 32 grandchildren; his one great-grandchild; his other extended family; and his many friends; and

WHEREAS, In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Philip McFarlane; four brothers, Robert, Thomas, Charles, and William McFarlane; and two sisters, Eileen Frohock and Margaret Moore; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of Dr. Peter J. McFarlane along with all who knew and loved him and extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Peter J. McFarlane as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
