SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with sadness of the death of Dr. H. James "Doc" Solomon of Beach Park on Saturday, April 17, 2004; and

WHEREAS, H. James Solomon was born in 1922; he graduated at the top of his class at the University of Illinois-Chicago Medical School; following medical school, he opened a clinic at the coal mines in Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, In 1958, Dr. Solomon moved to Zion, opened a clinic, and began practicing at Zion Hospital; he worked as a surgeon at area hospitals, including Victory, St. Therese, Condell, and Good Shepherd; he served as chief of staff at both Victory and St. Therese hospitals; in the 1970s, he was Director of Emergency Services for the Zion Fire Department; and

WHEREAS, In the late 1960s, when ambulance service was given up by mortuaries in Zion and other communities and was moving toward the public and private sector, Dr. Solomon worked with others to create Zion's emergency medical service; he trained and offered professional guidance to the pioneers who volunteered to serve in the field; and

WHEREAS, In 1986, Dr. Solomon was called on to serve as the first mayor of Beach Park, as the Village worked toward incorporation, a position he held from 1986 to 1994; he guided the Village as it established itself; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Solomon is remembered as a gentleman who chased after knowledge; his hobby was exploring restaurants and writing about his experiences; he was a great husband, father, and grandfather; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Dr. H. James "Doc" Solomon of Beach Park, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family, friends, community, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. H. James "Doc" Solomon as an expression of our sincere condolences.
