SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with regret of the death of Miriam Brooks-Sumlin on
4 April 3, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Miriam Brooks-Sumlin was born on January 22, 1934,
6 in Chicago; she attended School Elementary in Morgan Park; as a
7 teenager, her family moved to New York, where she subsequently
8 attended New York University and married Stanley James Sumlin,
9 a law school student; and
 
10     WHEREAS, After working for the United Nations, Miriam and
11 her family moved to Nairobi, Kenya, where she worked for Jommo
12 Kenyatta's international staff on behalf of visiting
13 dignitaries; some years later, she returned to Chicago and
14 obtained a degree from Chicago Teachers College (Chicago State
15 University); and
 
16     WHEREAS, She taught for many years at Drake Elementary
17 School, where she worked with children with special needs;
18 after finishing her master's degree in administrative
19 education from the University of Minnesota, her career included
20 a move to the Gifted Programs Office of the Chicago Board of
21 Education, where she was responsible for coordinating testing
22 facilities and teacher preparation for gifted children
23 throughout the City of Chicago; and
 
24     WHEREAS, Mrs. Sumlin spent much of her life teaching and
25 administering policies that enriched the educational life of a
26 broad range of children, from the mentally handicapped to the
27 gifted; she raised her children and countless others who had
28 the opportunity to sit at her "Sunday Table"; she was known for
29 her pineapple upside down cake as well as her love, nurturing
30 nature, and her concern; and

1     WHEREAS, The passing of Miriam Brooks-Sumlin has been
2 deeply felt by many, especially her daughter, Sheryl; her son,
3 Bruce; her grandchildren, Shawn, Jasmine, Annanda, Kristian,
4 Julian, and Robert; her great-grandchildren, Matthew, Anthony,
5 and Steven; her family members, Michelle, Maryjane, Max, John,
6 Ione, Marsha, Kyle, Linda, Rael, Lorraine, Royce, Royce Jr.
7 "Snooky", Karyn, Elaine, Noel, Patrick, Lester, Fitz, Gina,
8 Thomas, Veranda, John, Celene, Dorothy, Ferdinand, Joan,
9 Renald, Todd, Lynn, Ben, Seth, Joyce, Al, Eric, Beth, Ora,
10 Vincent, Carol, and Smitty; and all the wonderful children and
11 friends, especially most recently those from The Church of the
12 Hills; therefore, be it
 
13     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
14 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
15 Miriam Brooks-Sumlin, and we extend our deepest sympathy to her
16 family, friends, former students, and all who knew and loved
17 her; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the family of Miriam Brooks-Sumlin as an
20 expression of our sincere condolences.
