SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Susan Doxsie Smith of Decatur on Thursday, March 18, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was born on March 24, 1949, in Decatur to Lou and Beryl (Lytle) Doxsie; she graduated from MacArthur High School in Decatur in 1967; she married Jay P. Smith on June 24, 1972, in Decatur; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith had been the executive director of the Decatur Area Arts Council since 1993 and was an avid supporter of the arts; during her tenure as director, she spearheaded moving the arts council offices from Rock Springs to downtown Decatur in 1996; recently, she arranged for businesses to sponsor park benches creatively painted by local artists, established weekly Knit Nights at arts council offices, and was the driving force behind the new Community Arts Center, which is set to open by June 1, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was a wonderful friend, who was willing to give of herself at every opportunity; she had a passion for arts in the schools and a knack for making the arts accessible to regular people; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was a member of Central Christian Church; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Susan Doxsie Smith has been deeply felt by many, especially her husband, Jay; her children, Samuel J. Smith and wife Suzanne, Andy Smith, and Sarah Smith; and her brothers, John Doxsie and wife Julie and Tom Doxsie and wife Lori; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Susan Doxsie Smith, and we extend our deepest sympathy to her friends, family, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Susan Doxsie Smith as an expression of our sincere condolences.
