SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with regret of the death of Eugene H. "Gene" Rawhoof of
4 Zion on Thursday, March 4, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Rawhoof was born on October 15, 1923 in Hardin
6 County and spent his early years in Pope County; he valiantly
7 served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II; he was
8 with the Third Fleet aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme
9 Richard; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Mr. Rawhoof moved to Lake County in 1946, where he
11 married his wife, Virginia, in 1949; he worked at Manville
12 Corporation in Waukegan for several years before being elected
13 Business Representative of the International Chemical Workers
14 Union (ICWU) Local 60; and
 
15     WHEREAS, In 1968, Mr. Rawhoof became International
16 Representative for ICWU, a position he held until retirement in
17 1988; during this time, he also served in many positions with
18 the AFL-CIO, including president of the Lake County AFL-CIO
19 Council (now Northeastern Illinois Federation of Labor,
20 AFL-CIO), chairman of the tenth congressional district COPE,
21 and Senior Consultant with the Illinois State AFL-CIO; and
 
22     WHEREAS, In recent years, Mr. Rawhoof served as an officer
23 in the Illinois Dunesland Preservation Society, a 60-year-old
24 organization devoted to the preservation, protection, and
25 improvement of Illinois Beach State Park, Lake Michigan, and
26 the surrounding area; he was active in many community
27 organizations, including as a member of Our Savior's
28 Evangelical Lutheran Church in Zion, as a former chairman of
29 the Zion Police & Fire Commission, as a member of the Board of
30 Directors of the Lake County Community Action Program and the
31 Lake County Council on Alcoholism, as a member of the Lake

1 County Governmental Study Commission II, as a volunteer for
2 numerous Red Cross and United Way campaigns, and as a member of
3 the National Council of Senior Citizens and its successor
4 organization, the Alliance for Retired Americans (ARA), and
5 AARP; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Mr. Rawhoof was a driving force within the
7 Democratic Party, serving as a precinct committeeman for many
8 years, a delegate to the 1988 Democratic Nominating Convention,
9 and an officer of the Lake County Democratic Central Committee;
10 and
 
11     WHEREAS, The passing of Eugene H. "Gene" Rawhoof has been
12 deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Virginia H. (nee
13 Riske) Rawhoof; his children, Donald E. Rawhoof and Sandra A.
14 (Gary) Kern; his grandsons, Gary Dale and Travis Eugene Kern;
15 his sisters, Madeline Carr, Catherine (Don) Riley, Ann
16 (William) Robinson, Doris (Donny) Millis, Loris (Eugene)
17 Walker, Violet Wyber, and Sandra and Celia Cornell; his
18 brothers, Curtis (Betty) Carman, Everette Carman, Herschel
19 (Francis) Carman, Hubert (Charlene) Carman, Wendell (Linda)
20 Carman, Jerry (Bonnie) Carman, Vivia Jim Cornell, and Marvin
21 Cornell; his aunt, Alta Hubbard; and his many nieces, nephews,
22 and friends; therefore, be it
 
23     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
24 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
25 Eugene H. "Gene" Rawhoof, and we extend our deepest sympathy to
26 his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
27 further
 
28     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
29 presented to the family of Eugene H. "Gene" Rawhoof as an
30 expression of our sincere condolences.
