SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 were saddened to learn of the death of Dr. R. Robert Simpson of
4 Alton on January 6, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Dr. Simpson was born May 27, 1953, in Alton to Dr.
6 Raymond and Antigone "Andy" (Kodros) Simpson; his father
7 preceded him in death; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Dr. Simpson and the former Nancy Muha were married
9 on June 18, 1976; and
 
10     WHEREAS, A 1971 graduate of Alton High School, he was a
11 member of the tennis team and qualified for the State
12 tournament his senior year; his love for the game of tennis
13 came from his father at an early age, and he passed his love of
14 the game onto his son, Rob; and
 
15     WHEREAS, He attended Carthage College in Kenosha,
16 Wisconsin, where he was inducted into Beta Beta Beta, a
17 national honorary biological society, and Theta Chi Delta, a
18 national honorary chemistry society; he was also voted Most
19 Valuable Player on the Carthage tennis team; and
 
20     WHEREAS, After graduating from Carthage, he attended the
21 Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine, where he was a member
22 of Durlacher, as academic honor society; he completed his
23 residency in podiatric surgery at the University of Chicago
24 Hospitals and Clinics; he had many articles published in
25 medical journals and delivered many lectures in the Chicago
26 area; after returning to Alton in 1980, Dr. Simpson began a
27 private podiatry practice and continued until his death; and
 
28     WHEREAS, His active interest in tennis did not stop after
29 college; from 1986 until his death, he was chairman of the Bud

1 Simpson Prize Money Tennis Tournament; in 1987 and 1988, he was
2 the men's tennis coach at Lewis and Clark Community College
3 (LCCC); from 1989 until 1991, he served as chairman of the
4 tennis committee for Alton Park and Recreation for the
5 development and construction of the Dr. Raymond R. Simpson
6 Tennis Center at Gordon Moore Park; and he was very involved in
7 the St. Louis District Tennis Association and was on the
8 Association's board for several years; and
 
9     WHEREAS, A past member of the Lewis and Clark Trailblazers
10 Club, Dr. Simpson was instrumental in bringing the United
11 States Tennis Association (USTA) Futures Tournaments to LCCC;
12 he was a longtime member of St. Paul Episcopal Church in Alton
13 and active in the vestry for many years; and
 
14     WHEREAS, He was very active in the Alton community and will
15 be missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife,
16 Nancy; his mother, Antigone "Andy" Simpson; his daughter, Kate
17 Simpson; his son, Rob Simpson; his mother-in-law and
18 father-in-law, Iris and Bill Durland; his brothers-in-law,
19 Jeff Muha and Drew Muha (wife, Rebecca); and many cousins,
20 including Irene McLaughlin, Mimi Almonroeder, and Gigi Darr;
21 therefore, be it
 
22     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
23 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
24 Dr. R. Robert Simpson along with all who knew and loved him and
25 extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and
26 be it further
 
27     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
28 presented to the family of Dr. R. Robert Simpson as an
29 expression of our deepest sympathy.
