SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Mary Rita Madigan of Chicago on Tuesday, December 23, 2003; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Madigan was born on December 27, 1912; she married Michael J. Madigan, who preceded her in death in the 1970s; she was a longtime Chicago resident and the mother of the Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, Michael J. Madigan; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Madigan worked as an accountant for Brogan Coal and Ice Co., but spent most of her life as a homemaker; she was active in her son's early campaigns; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Madigan lived on Chicago's Southwest Side and was known among neighbors for her own accomplishments, including her chocolate chip cookies; she loved to shop and kept up on current events; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Mary Rita Madigan has been deeply felt by many, especially her son, Michael J. and his wife, Shirley; her daughter, Marita McGivney and her husband, Jack; her grandchildren, John Dietrick, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Tiffany Madigan, Nicole Madigan, and Andrew Madigan; and her great-grandchildren, Mary Rose and John; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Mary Rita Madigan, and we extend our deepest sympathy to her friends, family, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mary Rita Madigan as an expression of our sincere condolences.
