SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/27-22   from Ch. 122, par. 27-22
30 ILCS 805/8.28 new

    Amends the School Code. Makes changes concerning the course prerequisites to receive a high school diploma. Provides that each pupil entering the 9th grade in 2008-2009 must successfully complete one year of Algebra 1 or geometry and one year of biology, chemistry, or physics. Provides that each pupil entering the 9th grade in the 2009-2010 school year or a subsequent school year must successfully complete (i) 3 (instead of 2) years of mathematics, including one year of Algebra 1 and one year of plane geometry, and (ii) one year of biology and one year of chemistry, one year of biology and one year of physics, or one year of chemistry and one year of physics (instead of one year of science). Amends the State Mandates Act to require implementation without reimbursement. Effective immediately.

1     AN ACT with regard to education.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section
5 27-22 as follows:
 
6     (105 ILCS 5/27-22)  (from Ch. 122, par. 27-22)
7     Sec. 27-22. Required high school courses.
8     (a) As a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma,
9 each pupil entering the 9th grade in 1984-1985 and subsequent
10 years must, in addition to other course requirements,
11 successfully complete the following courses:
12         (1) 1. three years of language arts;
13         (2) 2. two years of mathematics, one of which may be
14     related to computer technology and, for pupils entering the
15     9th grade in the 2008-2009 school year, one of which must
16     be Algebra 1 or geometry;
17         (3) 3. one year of science, which, for pupils entering
18     the 9th grade in the 2008-2009 school year, must be either
19     biology, chemistry, or physics;
20         (4) 4. two years of social studies, of which at least
21     one year must be history of the United States or a
22     combination of history of the United States and American
23     government; and
24         (5) 5. One year chosen from (A) music, (B) art, (C)
25     foreign language, which shall be deemed to include American
26     Sign Language or (D) vocational education.
27     (b) As a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma,
28 each pupil entering the 9th grade in the 2009-2010 school year
29 or a subsequent school year must, in addition to other course
30 requirements, successfully complete all of the following
31 courses:
32         (1) Three years of language arts.

1         (2) Three years of mathematics, one of which may be

4         (3) Two years of science, which must be (A) one year of

6     and one year of physics, or (C) one year of chemistry and

10     of history of the United States and American government.
11         (5) One year chosen from (A) music, (B) art, (C)
12     foreign language, which shall be deemed to include American
13     Sign Language, or (D) vocational education.
14     (c) This amendatory Act of 1983 does not apply to pupils
15 entering the 9th grade in 1983-1984 school year and prior
16 school years or to students with disabilities whose course of
17 study is determined by an individualized education program.
18     This amendatory Act of the 93rd General Assembly does not
19 apply to pupils entering the 9th grade in the 2007-2008 school
20 year or a prior school year or to students with disabilities
21 whose course of study is determined by an individualized
22 education program.
23     (d) The provisions of this Section are subject to the
24 provisions of Section 27-22.05.

26     Section 90. The State Mandates Act is amended by adding
27 Section 8.28 as follows:
 
28     (30 ILCS 805/8.28 new)
29     Sec. 8.28. Exempt mandate. Notwithstanding Sections 6 and 8
30 of this Act, no reimbursement by the State is required for the
31 implementation of any mandate created by this amendatory Act of
32 the 93rd General Assembly.
 
33     Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
