 1        AN ACT with regard to education.

 2        Be it enacted by the People of  the  State  of  Illinois,
 3    represented in the General Assembly:

 4        Section  5.   The  School  Code  is  amended  by changing
 5    Section 27-22 as follows:

 6        (105 ILCS 5/27-22) (from Ch. 122, par. 27-22)
 7        Sec. 27-22.  Required high school courses.
 8        (a)  As  a  prerequisite  to  receiving  a  high   school
 9    diploma,  each  pupil entering the 9th grade in 1984-1985 and
10    subsequent years before the 2003-2004 school  year  must,  in
11    addition  to other course requirements, successfully complete
12    the following courses:
13             (1) 1.  three years of language arts;
14             (2) 2.  two years of mathematics, one of  which  may
15        be related to computer technology;
16             (3) 3.  one year of science;
17             (4) 4.  two  years  of  social  studies, of which at
18        least one year must be history of the United States or  a
19        combination  of history of the United States and American
20        government; and
21             (5) 5.  One year chosen from (A) music, (B) art, (C)
22        foreign  language,  which  shall  be  deemed  to  include
23        American Sign Language or (D) vocational education.
24        This amendatory Act of 1983  does  not  apply  to  pupils
25    entering  the  9th  grade  in 1983-1984 school year and prior
26    school years or to students with disabilities whose course of
27    study is determined by an individualized education program.
28        (b)  As  a  prerequisite  to  receiving  a  high   school
29    diploma,  each  pupil entering the 9th grade in the 2003-2004
30    school year or a subsequent school year must, in addition  to
31    other  course  requirements, successfully complete all of the

 1    following courses:
 2             (1)  Four years of English.
 3             (2)  Three years of mathematics, one of which may be
 4        related to computer technology.
 5             (3)  Three years of science.
 6             (4)  Three years of  social  studies,  of  which  at
 7        least  one year must be history of the United States or a
 8        combination of history of the United States and  American
 9        government.
10             (5)  Two  years  of  a  foreign  language,  which is
11        deemed to include American Sign Language.
12             (6)  Two years of fine arts, which may  include  one
13        year of art or drafting and one year of music.
14             (7)  Two years of physical education.
15        This amendatory Act of the 93rd General Assembly does not
16    apply  to  pupils  entering  the  9th  grade in the 2002-2003
17    school year or a  prior  school  year  or  to  students  with
18    disabilities  whose  course  of  study  is  determined  by an
19    individualized education program.
20        (c)  The provisions of this Section are  subject  to  the
21    provisions of Section 27-22.05.

23        Section  90.  The State Mandates Act is amended by adding
24    Section 8.27 as follows:

25        (30 ILCS 805/8.27 new)
26        Sec. 8.27. Exempt mandate.   Notwithstanding  Sections  6
27    and  8 of this Act, no reimbursement by the State is required
28    for  the  implementation  of  any  mandate  created  by  this
29    amendatory Act of the 93rd General Assembly.

30        Section 99.  Effective date.  This Act  takes  effect  on
31    July 1, 2003.
