HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois learned with great sorrow of the death of Dr.
4 Jacob H. Carruthers at the age of 73; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Jacob Carruthers was an academic of great insight,
6 intellect, compassion, and pride; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Dr. Carruthers was a man of letters, author of
8 several scholarly treatises and books that redefined the study
9 of African Americans in the urban environment; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Jacob Carruthers was a champion of
11 African-Centered Thought and Community-Centered learning; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Dr. Carruthers was a founder and professor of
13 history and education at the Center for Inner City Studies of
14 Northeastern Illinois University for 32 years; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Dr. Carruthers pioneered and refined academic
16 theories and influenced generations of students who sought
17 careers working in the urban environment of the inner city; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Jacob Carruthers was a leader of leaders, guiding
19 and advising businessmen, ministers, State senators and
20 representatives, mothers and fathers; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Jacob Carruthers proudly served his country in the
22 United States Air Force during the Korean War; and
 
23     WHEREAS, Jacob Carruthers graciously and generously served
24 the African-American community and mankind; therefore, be it
 
25     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
26 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

1 join the friends and family of Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers in
2 mourning the loss of this great man; and be it further
 
3     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to the family of Dr. Jacob H. Carruthers as an
5 expression of our deepest sympathy.
