HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives recognize Sgt. Mike Johnstone of the
4 Bolingbrook Police Department for his efforts to establish
5 relationships between young people and the police through the
6 program "Beat the Heat, Inc."; and
 
7     WHEREAS, This national organization is a way for officers
8 to meet with young people in a professional drag racing
9 environment; the race cars and the program are used as a way to
10 show kids that there are alternatives to gangs, drugs, and
11 violence; and
 
12     WHEREAS, The purpose of "Beat the Heat, Inc." is to help
13 educate the young people of our communities about the real
14 problems of illegal drug and alcohol use, to educate everyone
15 to the horrors of alcohol or drug impaired driving, to promote
16 a better understanding between the Police and the community
17 they serve, to educate the general public about drag racing,
18 and to encourage everyone not to race in the street; and
 
19     WHEREAS, In 2002, the name of the Bolingbrook team was
20 changed from the "Bolingbrook Police Racing Team" to "Illinois
21 Beat the Heat"; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Sgt. Johnstone shows and races the 1984 Chevrolet
23 "Too Fat To Fly" Impala Police Race Car; this car made it's
24 best pass of 9.89 seconds at 134 miles per hour; he is
25 currently adding a second car to the team, a 1990 Chevrolet
26 Caprice police car; therefore, be it
 
27     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
28 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
29 commend Sgt. Mike Johnstone for his efforts to help build
30 relationships between the police force and the youth of today;

2     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3 presented to Sgt. Mike Johnstone as an expression of our
4 respect and esteem.
