HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Eleanor
4 Wilson Travis on January 16, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Eleanor Wilson Travis was affectionately known as
6 "Mommie"; she was born in Itta Bena, Mississippi on June 6,
7 1914, to the union of the late Rev. Daniel Wilson Sr. and the
8 late Clara Clay Wilson; and
 
9     WHEREAS, She accepted Christ and was baptized at an early
10 age; she married Ellis Travis Sr. and to this great union eight
11 children were born; the two were married for over forty years;
12 her husband preceded her in death; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Mrs. Travis believed in education and hard work;
14 she has a passion for style; she began with earning a
15 beauticians license from Lydia Adams School of Beauty Cultural;
16 she owned a beauty school and deli at Wilshire Apartments and
17 The Press Club Lounge near the Defender Newpaper in Chicago;
18 she was also one of the first black women to own a lounge,
19 which was 808 Liquors; for 20 years, her last business venture
20 was Jason's New and Used Resale Furniture Store in Chatham
21 where she assisted many families in obtaining affordable
22 furniture; her last work venture lasted over a span of twenty
23 years as a member of "God's Victorious Army" under the
24 leadership of Rev. Morris Cerello; in April of 2002, she earned
25 the title of Elder; and
 
26     WHEREAS, The passing of Eleanor Wilson Travis will be
27 deeply felt by many, especially her sons, Earl (Linda) Travis,
28 Ellis (Earlean) Travis, Jr., Thomas James (Carol) Travis,
29 Curtis Alvin Travis; her daughters, Geraldine (Wilbert)
30 Hooten, Viralyn Renee McClendon, Rita (Reginald) Marion; her
31 sisters, Ida Wilson and Ella Dumas; her 26 grandchildren; her

1 38 great-grandchildren; her 17 great-great-grandchildren; her
2 dear friend, Ida Rivers; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews,
3 and other relatives; and other relatives and friends; and
 
4     WHEREAS, In addition to her parents and her husband, she
5 was preceded in death by her daughter, Alma Jean Harrell; her
6 granddaughter, Lavonne Travis; her brothers, Daniel and
7 Solomon Wilson; and her sisters, Rebecca Banks, Ellen Hodges,
8 Mae Pearl Caulden, and Zenobia Wilson; therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11 mourn the death of Eleanor Wilson Travis along with all who
12 knew and loved her and extend our sincere condolences to her
13 family and friends; and be it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15 presented to the family of Eleanor Wilson Travis as an
16 expression of our respect and esteem.
