 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives have
 3    learned with great sorrow of the death of Harriet K. Cahnmann
 4    at the age of 87; and

 5        WHEREAS, The former Harriet Kraut grew up  on  the  south
 6    side  of  Chicago,  where  her  father, Joseph, and later her
 7    brother, Charles,  operated  Kraut  Tailors  under  the  "El"
 8    tracks on east 63rd Street; and

 9        WHEREAS,  Harriet  spent  two  and  a  half  years of her
10    childhood in the Chicago Home For Jewish Orphans  at  62nd  &
11    Drexel,  where  she  provided constant support and foundation
12    for her siblings, Charles and the late Natalie Roussman; and

13        WHEREAS,  Harriet  spotted  her  future  husband,  German
14    Jewish immigrant, Fred Cahnmann, while taking  the  train  to
15    her  job at Lester Wittee & Co. CPA firm in downtown Chicago,
16    later meeting him on a synagogue sponsored bicycle trip; and

17        WHEREAS, Harriet and the late Fred Cahnmann were  married
18    58   years,  bearing  6  children,  24  grandchildren  and  8
19    great-grandchildren; and

20        WHEREAS, After raising her children,  Harriet  worked  at
21    the University of Chicago in the comptroller's office and the
22    athletic department for 14 years; and

23        WHEREAS, Harriet served as a Democratic election judge in
24    the 8th, 19th, and 50th wards of the city of Chicago; and

25        WHEREAS, In her middle age Harriet was often seen tooling
26    around Chicago's south side on a pink 50 cc Yamaha motorcycle
27    that  her  daughter,  JoAnn,  had  won  in  a  pancake eating
28    contest; and

29        WHEREAS,  Harriet  enjoyed  helping  people  and  was  an
30    inspiration to everyone she touched; and

 1        WHEREAS, Even though her advancing age slowed  her  down,
 2    Harriet  always  played  the cards she was dealt the best she
 3    could and did what she wanted, even if it took her  a  little
 4    longer; and

 5        WHEREAS,  Harriet  Cahnmann's passing will be deeply felt
 6    by many, especially her sons, Raymond,  Leonard,  David,  and
 7    Sam  Cahnman; her daughters, Helen Rovner and JoAnn Hershten;
 8    and her brother, Charles Kraut; therefore, be it

 9        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
10    NINETY-THIRD  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11    we join the friends and family  of  Harriet  K.  Cahnmann  in
12    mourning the loss of this great woman; and be it further

13        RESOLVED,  That  suitable  copies  of  this resolution be
14    presented  to  the  family  of  Harriet  K.  Cahnmann  as  an
15    expression of our deepest sympathy.
