1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate Italian Consul General
4 Enrico Granara on retiring from his position; and
5 WHEREAS, Consul General Granara was born and raised in
6 Asmara Eritrea, when the territory was nominally a federated
7 state, but actually placed under Ethiopia's control; and
8 WHEREAS, After completing the Italian "Liceo" in Asmara,
9 he studied political sciences at the University of Padua,
10 obtaining his Laurea (M.A.) in 1978; he had a brief
11 experience as export manager in Milan, then, in 1980 he
12 attended the first diplomatic training course organized by
13 University of Florence; in 1983, he joined the Italian
14 Foreign Service, serving in the Economic Affairs Department;
15 and
16 WHEREAS, He served in Maputo (Mozambique), in Grenoble
17 (France), and then in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he was
18 appointed Consul General shortly before the Gulf War; and
19 WHEREAS, After reaching the grade of counselor, he was
20 recalled back to his ministry in Rome and served as deputy
21 head of the Middle East and North Africa desk, taking care of
22 political affairs and mediterranean multilateral cooperation
23 initiatives; and
24 WHEREAS, In June 1995, he was assigned to the Italian
25 Embassy in Mexico City, as Political Counselor and Deputy
26 Head of Mission; after reaching a higher career grade, he was
27 appointed Consul General of Italy in Chicago in August 1999,
28 where he continues to serve to this day; and
29 WHEREAS, Consul General Granara and his wife, Federica,
30 have two daughters, Bianca and Cecilia; and

1 WHEREAS, He is fluent in English, French, Spanish, and
2 Portuguese; he has a basic knowledge of German and Arabic;
3 his hobby includes translating texts into the Genoese
4 Language; therefore, be it
5 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7 we thank Italian Consul General Enrico Granara for his
8 untiring hard work, support, and contributions to the Italian
9 Language Initiative throughout his entire consular
10 jurisdiction and his commitment to unifying the Italian and
11 Italian American communities; and be it further
12 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13 presented to Italian Consul General Enrico Granara as an
14 expression of our respect and esteem.
