 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, Another round of Base  Realignment  and  Closure
 3    (BRAC) is scheduled for 2005; Illinois has two military bases
 4    in  danger  of  being closed; the shutdown of either of these
 5    military bases would  have  extremely  adverse  economic  and
 6    social  effects  upon  the local communities around the bases
 7    and to the State of Illinois as a whole; and

 8        WHEREAS, The Rock Island Arsenal, located in Rock Island,
 9    Illinois, is an active United States Army facility located on
10    a 946-acre island in the Mississippi River, originally  built
11    in  1816  as  Fort  Armstrong  and  established  by an Act of
12    Congress in 1862; in 1969, the  arsenal  was  placed  on  the
13    National  Register  of  Historic  Places  and  in  1989,  the
14    original   arsenal   buildings  were  designated  a  National
15    Historic Landmark; and

16        WHEREAS, The Rock Island Arsenal is the  only  U.S.  Army
17    facility  that  assembles  tool  sets, kits, and outfits that
18    support equipment in the field; the arsenal manufactures  gun
19    mounts,  recoil  mechanisms,  artillery  carriages, and other
20    combat equipment; therefore, be it

21        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
22    NINETY-THIRD  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
23    we urge  the  Governor  of  Illinois,  the  Illinois  General
24    Assembly,  and  the Illinois congressional delegation to make
25    the effort of saving the Rock Island Arsenal a top  priority;
26    and be it further

27        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
28    delivered to the Governor and to each member of the  Illinois
29    congressional delegation.
