 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, For over 60  years,  Dr.  Margaret  Taylor  Goss
 3    Burrough  has been completely dedicated to the creative arts,
 4    international culture and  to  African-American  history  and
 5    traditions; and

 6        WHEREAS,  Although  Dr.  Burrough  was  born  in St. Rose
 7    Louisiana, she moved to Chicago with her parents and  sisters
 8    when she was only 4 years old; after graduating from what was
 9    then  Chicago  Teachers  College,  now known as Chicago State
10    University, she attended the Art Institute of Chicago,  where
11    she  received  both a Bachelors and Masters of Art Education;
12    and

13        WHEREAS, As an  art  educator,  Dr.  Burrough  taught  in
14    Chicago  Public Schools, including DuSable High School and at
15    various colleges including  Kennedy-King  City  College;  she
16    also  studied  at  Columbia  University  in  New York and the
17    Institute of Painting and Sculpture in Mexico City; she was a
18    guest member of the famous Graphic Artist Workshop, conducted
19    by Leopold Mendez in Mexico City; and

20        WHEREAS, Dr. Burrough is the  Principal  Founder  of  the
21    DuSable Museums of African-American history in Chicago, which
22    is the first black museum in the United States; and

23        WHEREAS,  In  the world of visual arts, Dr. Burrough is a
24    printmaker, oil painter, sculptress, and pen and ink  artist;
25    her   work  has  been  exhibited  in  galleries,  art  fairs,
26    exhibitions, colleges, and universities in the United States,
27    Mexico, Poland, Germany, China, and Russia; and

28        WHEREAS, Dr. Burrough envisioned an organization  devoted
29    to  the  growth  and  stimulation of art for Black people; in
30    1939, she was one of the founders of the South Side Community
31    Art  Center   which   introduced   sculptor   Richard   Hunt;

 1    photographer and author, Gordon Parks; and featured the works
 2    of  Archibald  Motley,  Charles  White,  and  poet  Gwendolyn
 3    Brooks; and

 4        WHEREAS,  In 1947, Dr. Burrough's writing talents emerged
 5    when  she  published  "Jasper,  the  Drummin'   Boy";   other
 6    published  articles  she  has  written include, "His Name was
 7    DuSable and He was the First"  and  "What  Shall  I  Tell  My
 8    Children  Who  Are  Black?";  they  have been translated into
 9    African languages, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, and Spanish; her
10    articles on art, culture, and history have been published  in
11    journals such as Freedomways, The Chicago School Journal, and
12    in Time magazine; and

13        WHEREAS, Dr. Burrough has been recognized by universities
14    and  cultural organizations worldwide and is the recipient of
15    six honorary degrees, and over sixty honors  and  awards;  in
16    1966,  as  Advisor of the National Conference of Artists, she
17    was invited to head a delegation to visit  Russia;  in  1980,
18    President  Jimmy Carter honored her at the White House as one
19    of the "Ten Outstanding Black Artists in the country"; and

20        WHEREAS,  Dr.  Burrough  is  one  of  the  most  creative
21    pioneers in the Black cultural movement;  and in  her  honor,
22    on  March  8, 2003, a silent auction and book signing will be
23    held at Cliffbreakers Restaurant in Rockford;  therefore,  be
24    it

25        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
26    NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that
27    we  thank  Dr.  Margaret  Taylor Goss Burrough for all of her
28    hard work and dedication to the citizens of this  State;  and
29    be it further

30        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
31    presented to Dr.  Margaret  Burrough  with  our  respect  and
32    esteem.
