 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, It has come to our attention  that  Peter  Beak,
 3    University  of Illinois Professor and resident of Urbana, has
 4    been elected to the National Academy of Sciences; and

 5        WHEREAS, Professor Beak is the Roger Adams  Professor  of
 6    Chemistry   at  the  University  of  Illinois;  his  research
 7    involves  synthetic,  structural  and   mechanistic   organic
 8    chemistry,  and new reaction processes; he holds a bachelor's
 9    degree from Harvard University  and  a  doctorate  from  Iowa
10    State University; and

11        WHEREAS,  Professor  Beak  has  made  major contributions
12    throughout his  career  in  physical  organic  chemistry  and
13    organic  synthesis; he has proven to be a leader in his field
14    of organic chemistry; and

15        WHEREAS, Professor Beak has  established  himself  as  an
16    excellent  teacher  at  the  University  of  Illinois; he has
17    played an important role as a trainer  and  mentor  of  young
18    researchers; and

19        WHEREAS,  Professor  Beak  has  earned  the esteem of the
20    science  community  he  serves  and  the   respect   of   his
21    colleagues; and

22        WHEREAS, Professor Beak is married to Sandy Beak, also of
23    Urbana; therefore, be it

24        RESOLVED,  BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-
25    THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE  STATE  OF  ILLINOIS,  that  we
26    congratulate   Professor  of  Chemistry  Peter  Beak  on  the
27    recognition of his important scientific contributions and his
28    election to the National  Academy  of  Sciences;  and  be  it
29    further

30        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
