HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Dr. Martha U. Gillette, professor of cell and structural biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, for receiving the Women in Neuroscience Mika Salpeter Lifetime Achievement Award; and

WHEREAS, Women in Neuroscience, an international organization formed to promote the advancement of women in the field of neuroscience at all levels, awards the Mika Salpeter Lifetime Achievement Award annually to one recipient; qualifications for receiving the award include: sustained exceptional achievements in neuroscience as evidenced by publications, inventions, or awards; service to the neuroscience profession through related organizations; recognition at national or international levels as a scientist, educator, businessperson, or administrator in neuroscience; demonstration of a high degree of imagination, innovation, and initiative in the pursuit of neuroscience; an unusual dedication to facilitating the entry, mentoring, and advancement of young women in the field of neuroscience; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gillette is exceptionally qualified for this award; she is head of the Department of Cell and Structural Biology and a professor of cell and structural biology and molecular and integrative physiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; she has an appointment to the Institute for Genomic Biology; she co-chairs two Chancellor's Cross-Campus Initiatives; her work includes ground-breaking research in the field of sleep disorders; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Gillette has been a member of the University of Illinois faculty since 1989; since 1986 she has been a mentor to female medical scholars and female graduate and postdoctoral researchers; Dr. Gillette was instrumental in creating opportunities for women at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; she is the associate editor of the journal "Sleep"; she is the vice-president of the National Sleep Foundation and is the President of the Society for Research on Biological Rhythms; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Dr. Martha U. Gillette on her recent award and recognize her as an asset to the University of Illinois and to the State of Illinois as a whole; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Gillette as a token of our respect and esteem and with our best wishes for future success in her respective field.
