HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of David S.
4 Canter on August 26, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Canter, a Hyde Park community resident, was
6 heavily involved in Chicago politics, education, the newspaper
7 business, and the practice of law; he made a career of fighting
8 social and economic inequality wherever he saw it; and
 
9     WHEREAS, David S. Canter was born in Boston, Massachusetts
10 in 1923; his father moved the family from Boston to Russia when
11 Mr. Canter was a child; Mr. Canter returned to Boston for high
12 school before receiving his bachelor's degree from the
13 University of Chicago and then earning his law degree from the
14 John Marshall Law School; and
 
15     WHEREAS, While in school, Mr. Canter became involved in
16 student politics and served as editor-in-chief of his high
17 school and college newspapers; he later edited the Packinghouse
18 Workers Union's Champion, Hyde Park-Kenwood Voices, and former
19 Chicago Mayor Harold Washington's Second Term newsletter, and
20 with his swift pen, he also printed dozens of newspapers on
21 behalf of Chicago politicians; and
 
22     WHEREAS, As a political activist, Mr. Canter marched with
23 Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 1960s, fighting for open-housing
24 in Chicago; and
 
25     WHEREAS, David S. Canter served as an advisor to prominent
26 Chicago politicians, including Harold Washington, Carol
27 Moseley Braun, and Bobby Rush; he was known for his
28 block-by-block command of voting patterns; and
 
29     WHEREAS, Mr. Canter served as former Mayor Washington's

1 Deputy Streets and Sanitation Commissioner, an aide to former
2 Governor Dan Walker, and an attorney for the Illinois Commerce
3 Commission, and right up to his death, he served as an attorney
4 for the Cook County Department of Human Rights; he was
5 especially devoted to heading up a revamp of the Miriam G.
6 Canter Middle School, named for his wife following her death in
7 1999, and served as a member of the Friends of Miriam G. Canter
8 Middle School; and
 
9     WHEREAS, David S. Canter's passing will be deeply felt by
10 many, especially his three children, Evan, Marc, and Anna
11 Pincus, and his nine grandchildren; and
 
12     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his wife, Miriam;
13 therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 mourn the passing of David S. Canter along with all who knew
17 and loved him and extend our sincere condolences to his family
18 and friends; and be it further
 
19     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to the family of David S. Canter as an expression of
21 our deepest sympathy.
