 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The City of  Lincoln  was  first  christened  by
 3    Abraham   Lincoln   in  1853;  the  City  will  reenact  this
 4    christening at a sesquicentennial celebration during the week
 5    of August 24 through August 31; and

 6        WHEREAS, The sesquicentennial  celebration  will  include
 7    several activities; there will be an 1860s baseball game with
 8    the  players  wearing  period  outfits,  an old-fashioned ice
 9    cream social and queen contest, an  historic  play  depicting
10    Abraham   Lincoln,   a   celebrity  parade,  an  Abe  Lincoln
11    look-a-like  contest,  popular  musical  groups,  civil   war
12    military  reenactments,  a  civil war ball, black history and
13    underground railroad lectures and displays, an 1850s  farming
14    educational  program,  a lecture evening on Abraham Lincoln's
15    life in Lincoln and Logan County, and more; and

16        WHEREAS, Lincoln is the only city in the world named  for
17    and  by  Abraham Lincoln and actually christened by him prior
18    to being elected President of the United States; Lincoln  has
19    a  current  population of approximately 15,800; therefore, be
20    it

21        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
22    NINETY-THIRD  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
23    we congratulate the City of Lincoln on the  occasion  of  the
24    sesquicentennial  anniversary  of  its christening; and be it
25    further

26        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
27    presented  to  Mayor  Elizabeth A. Davis with our best wishes
28    for a successful sesquicentennial celebration.
