HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the State of Illinois would like to thank the organizers, volunteers, and participants of the first ever Salem Relay for Life for their hard work and contributions to the event; and

WHEREAS, Relay for Life is an annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society; between 2,800 and 3,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed in Southern Illinois every year and about 1,200 people die from cancer each year; and

WHEREAS, The event coordinators had hoped to reach $50,000 with Salem's first Relay for Life, and they surpassed their goal, taking in $53,102 for the charity; and

WHEREAS, This year's Relay for Life consisted of 25 teams and 167 cancer survivors; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize and thank the efforts of the Salem community who helped make the first ever Salem Relay for Life such a success; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we extend our heartiest thanks to the volunteers, victims, and cancer survivors for their work on behalf of cancer research and awareness; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Salem Relay for Life committee members as an expression of our sincere gratitude and respect.
