HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Juneteenth is a celebration to commemorate the
3 abolition of slavery in the United States and its territories
4 in 1865; and
 
5     WHEREAS, In 2003 Illinois declared the third Saturday in
6 June of each year Juneteenth National Freedom Day and added the
7 holiday to those listed as State Commemorative Dates; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when news
9 was delivered to Texas (two and a half years after Lincoln
10 signed the Emancipation Proclamation) that those enslaved were
11 now free; and
 
12     WHEREAS, People around the country celebrate Juneteenth
13 National Freedom Day through various civic groups and reflect
14 on the suffering endured by early African-Americans; and
 
15     WHEREAS, One In a Million Inc., a not-for-profit
16 organization, will be hosting a Juneteenth Celebration in
17 Springfield the weekend of June 19-20, 2004; and
 
18     WHEREAS, This year's festivities mark the 11th anniversary
19 of the event to be held at Comer Cox Park and will include a
20 parade, live bands, African-American cuisine, a tennis clinic,
21 and a basketball tournament; and
 
22     WHEREAS, All contributions made at the Juneteenth
23 Celebration are used to help the local community by providing
24 services such as a back to school event, toy drive, and a
25 reading program for children throughout the year; therefore be
26 it
 
27     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
28 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

1 congratulate One In a Million Inc. on the occasion of the 11th
2 anniversary of its Juneteenth Celebration; and be it further
 
3     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to One In a Million Inc.
