| 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION | 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of Vivian "Viv" (Brimmer) Brown, who | 4 | | passed away on September 11, 2024; and | 5 | | WHEREAS, Vivian Brown was born to Carroll Nathan and | 6 | | Lillian Shelton Brimmer in Chicago on July 14, 1922; she was | 7 | | raised in West Woodlawn; she attended McCosh Elementary School | 8 | | and graduated from Englewood High School in June 1940; she | 9 | | later received an associate's degree from Wilson Junior | 10 | | College; she married William Robert Brown on August 31, 1947, | 11 | | and they had three children and raised their family in | 12 | | Woodlawn, Englewood, Bronzeville, and Chatham before | 13 | | purchasing a home in West Chesterfield, and he preceded her in | 14 | | death in 2003; and | 15 | | WHEREAS, Vivian Brown began her career as a librarian at | 16 | | the central branch of the Chicago Public Library; she later | 17 | | transferred to the Oakwood branch in Lincoln Center; after an | 18 | | interim with the Chicago Commission for Handicapped Children, | 19 | | she took a position as a catalogue librarian at Chicago State | 20 | | University (CSU), where she worked until retiring in 2005 | 21 | | after 38 years of service; while employed at CSU, she | 22 | | completed her baccalaureate degree in Black Studies; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Vivian Brown was a lifetime member of Sigma Gamma | 2 | | Rho Sorority, Inc. and sang regularly in the choir at Lincoln | 3 | | Memorial Church, where she had been baptized and married; and | 4 | | WHEREAS, Vivian Brown enjoyed reading, working crossword | 5 | | puzzles, and traveling extensively, including a 1988 trip to | 6 | | Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore; she also enjoyed watching NBA | 7 | | basketball, especially the Golden State Warriors; on her 100th | 8 | | birthday, she was honored with a call from Scottie Pippen and a | 9 | | musical tribute from the Grammy winning group Take Six; and | 10 | | WHEREAS, Vivian Brown is survived by her children, Lydia | 11 | | Louise (Magras Muhammad), Charlotte Marie, and William | 12 | | (Barbara) Brown Jr.; two grandchildren; two great-nephews; one | 13 | | great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; six | 14 | | great-grandnieces; her great-grandnephews; and a host of | 15 | | friends and great-great- grandnieces and | 16 | | great-great-grandnephews; therefore, be it | 17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | 18 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 19 | | Vivian "Viv" (Brimmer) Brown and extend our sincere | 20 | | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved | 21 | | her; and be it further | 22 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
